Vancouver Police sorry for mistaken arrest

VANCOUVER – The Vancouver Police Department has wasted no time apologizing to a man injured during an arrest in what turned out to be a case of mistaken identity.

The department issued a news release saying “several senior members” of the force apologized to the unidentified 51-year-old man just hours after he suffered scrapes and sore ribs during a take-down in east Vancouver.

Police say the man was in the yard of a private home at around 9:30 a.m. when he was mistaken for a man seen running from a nearby bank moments earlier.

An officer chasing the suspect already had the victim in handcuffs by the time other police arrived and confirmed the wrong person was in custody.

The man was treated in hospital and is now recovering at home while the VPD Professional Standards Section investigates.

Police later found the original suspect seen running from the bank and he was released when officers determined no crime had been committed.
