VPD to consider new guidelines for dealing with sex workers

The brother of a woman whose DNA was found on serial killer Robert Pickton’s Port Coquitlam farm says he’s pleased the Vancouver Police Board is looking at the way officers treat sex trade workers.
This week, the board will be discussing a new set of guidelines that encourages officers to treat sex workers in a way that builds relationships and ensures their safety.
But Ernie Crey wonders what has been guiding the officers in their work before, particulary with those workers in the downtown eastside.

“For them to be considering a new set of guidelines this late in the game surprises me.  But nevertheless, I’m happy they’re going down this path and that we can probably look to these new guidelines being implemented in the days ahead.”

The report, from Deputy Chief Warren Lemcke, will be discussed Wednesday.
