World maintains lead at Continental Cup

LANGLEY, B.C. – Despite Jeff Stoughton’s best efforts, the World opened a 30-24 lead over North America at the Continental Cup on Thursday after splitting Draw 3.

Winnipeg’s Stoughton downed Niklas Edin of Sweden 8-3 to claim six points for North America. Stoughton broke the game open with four points in the fourth end.

Scotland’s Tom Brewster led his rink to a 7-1 victory in eight ends over Pete Fenson of the United States for six points, while Norway’s Thomas Ulsrud tied Glenn Howard of Coldwater, Ont., 4-4 so each team earned three points.

The men were unable to close in on the lead the World team opened during the mixed doubles draws.

Sweden’s Sebastian Kraupp and Anette Norberg claimed six points with an 8-4 win over Winnipeg’s Reid Carruthers and Regina’s Kim Schneider.

Brewster and China’s Yue Qingshuang scored two in the last end to forge a 7-7 draw with Toronto’s Wayne Middaugh and American Nina Spatola.

Norway’s Thomas Ulsrud and Sweden’s Cissi Ostlund also came back late to cut into North America’s points, scoring two in the last end in a 9-9 tie with American Shawn Rojeski and Marliese Kasner of Prince Albert, Sask.

The two teams split the points in the women’s early draw. Saskatoon’s Stefanie Lawton beat Norberg 11-3, while China’s Wang Bingyu beat American Patti Lank 6-5. Scotland’s Eve Muirhead and Amber Holland of Yorkton, Sask., drew 5-5 when Muirhead laid two in the final end.
