A 17-year-old has avoided jail time, after breaking into London Drugs during the Stanley Cup riot in Vancouver and stealing cigarettes and cosmetics.
The Burnaby teen, who pleaded guilty in May, has been sentenced to 18 months of probation, under what’s called an intensive support and supervision order.
Under it, the young person must complete 120 hours of community service, have a 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. curfew for the first year, a midnight to 7 a.m. curfew for the six months after that, and must stay in school or have a job.
The teen must also write an essay on why riots undermine the values of a democratic society, and apologize to the City of Vancouver and workers at London Drugs.
The 17-year-old is the second youth to be sentenced, and only the seventh rioter in general to learn his or her fate.
Meanwhile, 18-year-old Jordan Houde of Maple Ridge originally faced charges of participating in a riot and two counts of mischief.
But in June, an additional charge of break and enter was laid.
He’ll be back in court in the new year for a pre-sentencing report.
Houde is the 53rd rioter to plead guilty.
