David Goyer To Helm “Monte Cristo” Reboot

“Batman Begins” and “Man of Steel” scribe David Goyer has signed on to direct a new film adaptation of the classic Alexandre Dumas revenge tale “The Count of Monte Cristo” for Constantin Films and Impact Pictures.

Set in early 19th century France, the tale centers on Edmond Dantes, a young man betrayed and falsely imprisoned. While on a prison island, Dantes meets a fellow inmate who not only educates the man but also points him in the direction of a fortune.

When Dantes finally escapes after many years, he re-emerges in Paris society primed to take revenge against the men who took away his love and his freedom. Michael Robert Johnson (“Pompeii”) penned the script, while Jeremy Bolt (“Resident Evil”) will produce.

The story will be set in the period, but have a contemporary feel and edge – essentially trying to adapt Dumas’ work along the same lines that Guy Ritchie did for “Sherlock Holmes”.
