“Evil Dead” Reboot Films As Lawsuit Hits

Shooting kicked off this week in New Zealand on the remake of “Evil Dead”, the same time a lawsuit regarding the franchise has been filed.

Renaissance Pictures, the company Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert formed in 1979 to produce the original “Evil Dead”, is suing Award Pictures for trademark infringement and further counts over Award’s intention to produce their own fourth “Evil Dead” film entitled “Evil Dead 4: Consequences” says THR Esq..

Award Pictures claims a published 2000 remark by Raimi that “we’re never going to do a sequel” is “a public declaration by the defendant that the defendant abandoned the alleged ‘mark’ on Evil Dead decades ago.”

The Fede Alvarez-directed remake of ‘Dead’, which Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures is producing, is not affected and will keep filming through July.
