The unveilings continue for Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” with today’s dwarf pictorial coming from TIME Magazine.
Their photo shows the dwarf lords Balin (Ken Stott) and Dwalin (Graham McTavish), brothers who are close relatives and the “most loyal and trusted friends” of the Company’s leader Thorin Oakshield.
Balin has fought many battles but harbors doubts about their quest, Dwalin has no such doubts and is a strong fighter with a distrust of all non-Dwarves – especially Elves.
Both Stott and McTavish are Scottish actors best known for their TV work but have had plenty of big screen experience as well.
Stott is mostly known for British police dramas such as taking over the title role in the detective series “Rebus” from “The Mummy” actor John Hannah in 2006 and 2007. Stott also scored much acclaim and an award nomination for his work as DI Chappell in ITV police drama “The Vice”.
Other small screen roles include “Messiah,” Dennis Potter’s legendary “The Singing Detective,” “Silent Witness,” “Taggart,” “Takin’ Over the Asylum,” “Uncle Adolf,” “Toast” and Richard Curtis’ “The Girl in the Cafe”. On the big screen he’s also appeared in “Shallow Grave,” “King Arthur,” “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian,” “Plunkett and Macleane,” and “Charlie Wilson’s War.”
McTavish has appeared on basically every other British and American major network series of the past decade or so including the likes of “Lost,” “24,” “Prison Break,” “Rome,” “Red Dwarf,” “Numb3rs,” “NCIS,” “CSI: Miami,” “Cane,” “The Bill,” “New Tricks,” “Pushing Daisies,” “Jekyll,” “Ghost Whisperer,” “Casualty,” “Taggart,” “Highlander,” “Murphy’s Law” and TV movies like “Red Cap” and “Sharpe’s Challenge”.
He’s also appeared in such films as “Rambo,” “Ali G Indahouse,” “Middle Men,” “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider,” “King Arthur,” “Secretariat,” “Colombiana,” “Erik the Viking”, and provided the voices of animated incarnations of Loki in “The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” and Sebastian Shaw in “Wolverine and the X-Men”, along with voicing characters in countless video games including “Uncharted 2: Among Thieves,” “Infamous 2,” “Metro 2033,” “Singularity,” “Heavenly Sword,” “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2,” “Dragon Age: Origins,” and “Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2”.
Balin & Dwalin make the last of the Company of Twelve to be revealed, joining the already released Fili, Kíli, Dori, Nori, Ori, Óin, Glóin, Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur.
Still notably missing is their leader Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage). It’s also uncertain how many of the other significant new characters will get similar pictorials. Others could include Radagast the Brown (Sylvester McCoy), Bard the Bowman (Luke Evans), Thranduil (Lee Pace), The Master of Lake-town (Stephen Fry), Beorn (Mikael Persbrandt), and Tauriel (Evangeline Lily).
