Universal Pictures and Bluegrass Films are moving forward on a sequel to this year’s Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds-led thriller “Safe House” says Heat Vision.
The Daniel Espinosa-directed original followed a bored young CIA agent (Ryan Reynolds) overseeing a South African safe house who is thrust into a life-and-death adventure when he has to keep a rogue agent (Denzel Washington) safe.
The $ 85 million-budget film proved one of the few domestic hits this past Spring with a $ 126 million haul. Internationally it didn’t fare so well with just $ 76 million made outside the United States.
David Guggenheim, who penned the first film, is returning to write the as-yet-untitled follow-up and it’s presently undetermined whether it will be a prequel or a sequel.
Scott Stuber is returning as producer, no word if Espinosa will be back.
