10 people treated after pepper spray discharged at Abbotsford Safeway

An Abbotsford Safeway is closed for the night and 10 customers had to be treated, after a man discharged what could have been pepper spray.

Police spokesman Const. Ian MacDonald says the man was familiar to Safeway staff and they spotted him as soon as he entered shortly after 6 p.m. with something in his hand.

“An employee identified (it) as either being a can of pepper spray or bear spray (and) immediately interacted with this man and told him he couldn’t bring the can into the store. At that point in time, the man turned to depart, indicating that he wasn’t going relinquish the can. And (at) some point prior to exiting thru the doors, the can discharged.”

MacDonald says about ten people were affected.

He says witnesses and staff both gave police a good description and officers are now looking for the suspect.
