Backcountry skiiers caught in Mount Washington avalanche are OK

Mounties and Comox Search and Rescue crews are on their way to rescue four backcountry skiers who were caught in an avalanche in Strathcona Park on Vancouver Asland today.

Paul Berry with Comox Valley Ground Search and Rescue says one of the four men is believed to have leg injuries.

“We believe that they’re quite well-prepared for travel in these conditions. And of course, it doesn’t matter how skilled, how prepared you are, avalanches can catch you.”

Berry says it sounds like the men had the right equipment and did the right things.

RCMP contacted rescue teams at about 2:30 this afternoon.
