BCCLA pleased with Privacy Commissioner’s latest moves

The Privacy Commissioner’s demand for the BC Government to change its employee criminal record check policy is drawing praise from the BC Civil Liberties Association.

Policy Director Micheal Vonn says the report underscores that not every job requires a criminal records check.

Vonn says how the criminal record check information is handled is also a privacy concern, “What you want to do is make sure they are who they are so you can check their identification. But to actually put that sensitive information, subject to all kinds of concerns vis a vis identity theft, etc. into the file; hey-nonni-nonni-willy-nilly, well, that is the over-collection of information that puts people at risk.”

The Privacy Commissioner also wants police record checks into prospective job seekers to be dialed back.
