BC’s Transportation Minister preaches patience when it comes to “possible” transit fare hikes.

BC’s Transportation Minister says he understands the concern over possible transit fare hikes but is stressing they aren’t garanteed to happen.

Blair Lekstrom says every aspect of Translink will be looked at by an independant commissioner.

He says “Mister Crilly the Commissioner, who is independant, is going to go out and engage the public on this request from Translink and the mayors council on fare increases which they feel are needed in order to run the organization properly and meet the demands of the public and at the same the time the commissioner will ensure that there are no efficiences to be found elsewhere when he looks at the the need is on this fare increase.”

Blair Lekstrom says the truth is costs keep going up and when you have a world class transit system someone has to pay and not just promise the moon.

Lekstrom says “I think they are making political hay about this it is unfortunate it seems that virtually everything that happens if there is a cost increase the New Democrats seem to want to promise the world and unfortunately somebody is going to have to pay for this I am not a believer in digging a hole so deep that our children and grandchildren will pay for our greed today.”

He adds he does understand when people get upset about the possibility of any transit fare hike.
