Bellingham airport sees big business

With passengers at YVR soon to be hit with an increase in the airport’s improvement fee, it’s likely some travellers may turn elsewhere for a cheaper deal.
The president of the Bellingham Chamber of Commerce says that town’s airport is already seeing a spike.

“In the last ten years, it’s tripled in the number of passengers coming out and the vast majority of those are coming from Canada. We’re looking somewhere in the 60-to-70 percent of enplanements coming out of the Lower Mainland. We were at just over 100,000 back in 2000… in 2010 we were almost of 400,000, and we’re expecting almost 500,000 this year.”

Ken Oplinger says cheaper flights, lower fees, and a short drive down the I-5, are all contributing to the record numbers.
