Bishops weigh in on Northern Gateway Pipeline hearings

An unusual ally has appeared to protesters of the Northern Gateway oil pipeline.

Six Anglican bishops in BC and the Yukon want the National Energy Board to make sure its hearings into the proposed pipeline are fair and thorough.

Bishop Michael Ingham of the New Westminster Diocese says federal officials have recently talked about streamlining the project’s environmental review.

But he says that process must be given the time it needs.

“we need to balance economic prosperity with economic responsibility.”

Ingham says the church is concerned with more than just spirituality — but also social justice.

And adds the energy board must listen to the concerns of all people.
