Bridge construction not causing crashes

Ongoing construction of the new Port Mann Bridge may seem to be causing headaches for many commuters, but crash numbers compiled by the Insurance Corporation of BC don’t reflect that.

Total collisions recorded for the first three months of 2012, between United Boulevard in Coquitlam and 152nd Street in Surrey, number 149. That’s slightly above normal, if you factor in similar stats dating back five years.

In 2007, 473 total crashes were recorded compared to 417 last year.

The worst year was 2009 when ICBC tallied up 483 collisions along that corridor.

The bridge is slated for completion later this year.
