Canada-wide protests planned over cuts to refugee health care

Several groups representing healthcare workers are set to protest looming cuts to refugee medical care tomorrow, as part of a national day of action.

Ottawa is set to slash refugee healthcare service as part of changes made to its interim federal health program.

Nurse practitioner Sonja Rietkirk is one of many healthcare workers planning to protest.

“Among other healthcare services to be cut, the impact of some of these on refugees is prenatal care for pregnant women, childcare visits, access to mental health services, so we’re talking some pretty major cuts.”

The Vancouver protest takes place at 1 p.m. in front of the local Citizenship and Immigration office.
