Changes to income and disability assistance in BC

The provincial government has announced a carrot and stick approach in making changes to income and disability assistance policies.

Premier Christy Clark has announced more money will be spent to assist individuals with disabilities lead more independent lives.

“We’re increasing trust account limits to help people with disabilities lead more independent lives. We’re increasing the value of assets that people on disability assistance can retain and for instances couples and families will be able to retain up to 10-thousand dollars in assets and that’s double the 5000 dollars they were allowed to retain before.”

However, those on welfare will have to look harder for a job.

“And to help families avoid the cycle of income assistance dependancy, we’ve expanding the intensity of work search requirements.  For new income assistance applicants this means extending the work search from three to five weeks to strengthen therir efforts to find employment.”

The overall pricetag is about five million dollars.
