Don’t expect retroactive report cards

It would be unheard of to order BC teachers to retroactively write the report cards they so far haven’t as part of their job action. So says an employment relations expert at the University of Victoria.

Education Minister George Abbott has said parents can expect report cards once Bill 22 passes and touched on possibly, asking teachers to fill them out going back to the fall.

Professor Ken Thornicroft says the Government could reasonably ask teachers to update a child’s progress from the entire year in one report, “But if you’re asking the teachers to do a separate, independent report card reflecting the reporting period that is now past, I think that is a huge problem.”

He adds the teachers’ actions were protected under the Labour Relations Board.

Bill 22 could pass as early as next week, but the NDP is trying to delay its passage.
