Driver involved in deadly crash to plead guilty to lesser charge

The driver of a flatbed truck that killed a toddler in Vancouver nearly three years ago will plead guilty to a lesser charge next week.

William Mah was initially charged with dangerous driving causing death.

When he returns to Provincial court June 8th, he’s going to plead guilty to driving without due care and attention, involving the August 2009 collision at Abbott and Expo Boulevard.

His lawyer, Jonathan Israels, says Mah may comment after he’s been sentenced.

“He’s not pleading guilty to dangerous driving causing death.  Is he feeling pretty traumatic about this? Well, wouldn’t you? Of course he is. I mean, it’s not easy for Mr. mah’s family either. it’s a tragic case all around.”

Prosecutors have conceded the now-45 year old Mah may have been distracted by an unidentified skateboarder before striking the two year old girl and her mother.

The delay is because the victims need more time to put together impact statements.
