Drugs may have played a critical role in a collision that killed one man Saturday night.
RCMP say that a vehicle being driven by a 19-year-old male from Calgary allegedly crossed the centre line on the Sea to Sky Highway and crashed into an oncoming limousine.
The impact caused an explosion and the limousine was engulfed in flames.
Police say the 54-year-old limo driver, a Lower Mainland resident, died at the scene.
The Calgary man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Police are investigating the incident and say that drugs appear to have been a factor.
“This is a terrible tragedy that resulted in the death of an innocent driver,” said Sgt. Peter Thiessen in the statement to media. “The family of the deceased victim has been affected for a lifetime and will never be the same.”
The highway at Function Junction was closed in both directions for eight hours after the collision and reopened Sunday morning.
