DTES project gets go-ahead from city

Vancouver’s Development Permit Board has voted unanimously to go ahead with the Sequel 138 development in the downtown eastside.

The decision was made at City Hall after a six-hour meeting in which approximately 60 downtown eastside residents voiced their disapproval of the development.

One downtown eastside resident expressed his frustration with the decision, “We argue that this is a very political decision because it’s going to change the culture of the downtown eastside as we know it. Not that we don’t want better neighbourhoods; we want better neighbourhoods, but we want the same neighbours.”

The Sequel 138 development is now set to be built at the site of the old Pantages Theatre on east Hastings Street.
