Evacuees back home after natural gas leak in Maple Ridge

People from a dozen homes who were evacuated due to a natural gas leak in Maple Ridge Friday night, have now returned home.

It all started about 11:00PM in the 11800 block of 221st Street.

About four hours later, Neal Pobran with Fortis BC said the natural gas was under control.

“Our main priority when we get to any site like this or an odour call is we make the area safe.  And then, the gas is venting freely–we allow it to vent, and that’s pretty much the most safe way we can handle a lot of these calls and so that’s where we were at, and then when the levels came to an appropriate level, we responded accordingly.”

The cause is not yet known.
