First United shelter to stay open another year

The provincial government is extending funding to the First United homeless shelter in Vancouver for another year.

Minister responsible for housing Rich Coleman says the shelter has resolved some internal problems.

“It’s been a very good piece of the entire project to reduce homelessness, street homelessness in Vancouver particularly, over the last couple of years.  It needed to have some improvements. They’ve done that, they’re doing a great job now, so we’re stepping up with the funding.”

The shelter can house more than 200 people.

The extension will cost the government about $ 1 million.
