Float home owners see future sinking

Float home owners and marina operators packed a public meeting in Delta Thursday evening voicing their anger over fee increases by Port Metro Vancouver.

The Port is demanding rate increases for water lot leaseholders along the Fraser River, some as high as 80-percent. But that’s not the only cost about to go up. Marine insurance is also set to rise.

Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington says the increases have come as a total shock to residents. Now the goal is to negotiate a fair deal with the Port, “People were angry, and they were frightened and they were afraid of the costs involved. Some of them just simply couldn’t afford it. So, they went away feeling like we had accomplished something and that there was a way forward here.”

Huntington says considering the circumstances, that was the best thing the meeting could accomplish.
