Gas workers serve strike notice

The union representing 550 gas workers throughout BC has served 72-hour strike notice.

Gord van Dyck, with IBEW Local 2-13, says officials have been negotiating with Fortis BC for more than a year now with no contract.

He says the latest offer was disappointing, “The largest issue is two-tier wage package demands by the employer.”

van Dyck says the workers are considered an essential service, so the union must pass through the Labour Relations Board first before going on strike. He says that means the earliest workers could walk off the job would be a week this Monday.

He doubts the public will be affected, but some business owners could see an impact.
