Vancouver Council set to approve more money for shelters

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson is urging city council to approve grant money, aimed at improving shelter options for women and aboriginals.

Grants totalling $ 600-thousand are likely to be approved on Wednesday.

Vision Councillor Kerry Jang says the money will go to two organizations.

“We’re putting half a million dollars to St. James to increase some of their beds from 26 to 52.  The other grant is for $ 100-thousand to the Aboriginal Friendship Centre.  This is important, because right now there is no real aboriginal shelter for homeless aboriginals in the City of Vancouver.”

Jang says the aim of the funding is to establish permanent shelter spaces, adding provincial funding has been inconsistent on a year-by-year basis.

“When the funding is in place for year-round shelters, they do much better.”
