Government workers upset over Civil Service raises

Public workers are confused and angry over raises given to several political staffers in the Premier’s Office and other Ministries.

Freedom of Information documents show Executive and Ministerial Assistants have earned raises over the past year from 6 to 20 percent.

That has Darryl Walker with the Government Employees Union frustrated. He says raises are fine, if they’re deserved, “But our members have spent the last two years taking zeros and haven’t had a pay raises for three years. So, we’re concerned with that fact that this employer, the Government, is willing to dish out funds while our members are being offered one and a half percent over two years.”

Walker says the Government has some explaining to do.

Meanwhile, Sara MacIntyre, the Premier’s Director of Communications, says the net-zero mandate means raises are possible, as long as cuts can be found elsewhere in the contract.

MacIntyre adds, the compensation grid for political staff on Executive Councils has been frozen for six years and any changes are done after a thorough review.
