Gulf Islands leader says Lekstrom promised meeting ahead of ferries announcement

While B.C.’s transportation minister is promising “community consultations” in the wake of changes to the Coastal Ferry Act – at least one Gulf Islands leader says he already feels out of the loop.

Quadra Island and Strathcona Regional District director Jim Abram claims Blair Lekstrom personally called him Tuesday night, assuring him nothing would be announced before meetings with community leaders were held.

“We have not had that meeting yet and we were promised that we would have the meeting before any announcement was made. And here you go – we’ve got an announcement being made, we haven’t had a meeting yet.”

Abram acknowledges cuts are likely on routes such as the Gulf Islands.

He warns cut sailings and increased fares only mean people will flock to the mainland – leaving the province without profits from pricey property assessments.
