Hurricane Sandy heads for New York City

Hurricane Sandy is closing in on the U-S Mid-Atlantic coast, and has already left most of the empty streets of Atlantic City, New Jersey under water.

Subways and schools are closed across a region of 50 million people and thousands have fled inland to wait out the storm.

CKNW meteorlogist Mark Madryga says the storm makes landfall tonight.

“And really with that passage of of the center of the low–that’s when we’ll see the strongest winds, looking at about 120 kilometer an hour wind gusts in the New York and that’s when the real storm surge will pound in there. They’re looking for waves up to 11 feet with the passage of the centre of the storm. And not only that, heavy, heavy rainfall will pass through there–up to around 100 millimeters in a short time…so everything is still on track…the peak will be early this evening and probably right through the night.”
