Inquest in death of man shot by police

VANCOUVER – The BC Coroners Service has announced an inquest into the death of a man who was shot by Vancouver police.

Forty-eight-year-old Darrell Elroy Barnes died on July 22 of this year after he was shot by police during a confrontation in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

The inquest is set to begin on July 30 of next year and is scheduled for five days.

A jury will hear evidence from witnesses to determine the facts surrounding the man’s death and can make recommendations to prevent similar deaths in the future.

A coroners jury cannot make findings of legal responsibility.
