Some residents in Johnsons Landing are being allowed back home for the first time after a deadly mudslide tore through the tiny Kootenay village ten days ago.
Regional officials say parts of two out of 16 properties have been removed from an evacuation order.
“With each new piece of information we get from the geotechnical experts, we can re-assess the lines we’ve drawn around that evacuation order area and determine which properties are now safe to inhabit or safe to access,” says Frances Maika with the Central Kootenay Regional District.
Crews will continue to assess the stability of the terrain.
The slide wiped out three homes and killed four people on July 12. Two of the bodies have yet to be recovered.
