Mediation talks didn’t have staying power

The first day of mediation between BC Transit and the union representing bus drivers in Greater Victoria did not go well Thursday.

Union President Ben Williams says after about four hours, the mediator decided they shouldn’t keep going, “The union did put several new offers forward that were both rejected by BC Transit.”

Williams wouldn’t say what those offers included.

He says job action will continue with an overtime ban and there’s a possibility job action will escalate.

One of the largest sticking points with the union is over high-capacity shuttle buses, called ‘vicinity’ buses. The union has been pushing for the buses to be operated by drivers who are paid more and have more training.
