Most Canadians expect police, fire to use social media: survey

Most Canadians expect police and firefighters to respond to a call for help posted on social media.

That’s according to a new survey released by the Canadian Red Cross.

Two thirds of those polled say emergency services should be prepared to respond to distress calls posted on sites like Facebook and Twitter.

What’s more, spokeswoman Karen Snider says another third expect responders to actually send help.

“But what we want to tell people is please call 911 in an emergency. There’s a risk that if you post a call for help in social media, it might not get seen.”

She says disaster responders are still trying to figure out the best way to use social media.

Right now, the Red Cross uses the sites to share information such as tips to prepare for a disaster.
