New RCMP contract moving through system

BC’s Justice Minister says the new deal for the RCMP inked with Ottawa continues to work its way through the sign off stage.

Shirley Bond says municipalities who are being briefed on the details will get to decide if they want the deal, or not, “We are finishing the final sign-offs; obviously we need to do that at the Government level. I expect to have that done in time to beat the deadline outlined by Minister Toews, that is the end of March.”

Bond says despite a new 20 year deal for the Mounties, a two year review, and a five year opt-out clause has her still looking at Plan B, “Yes, my team continues to look at the background of what it would take to do a Provincial Police Force. Not our first priority but the homework is being done.”

She says the cost sharing formula still tops the list of concerns for municipalities.
