The trial of a former BC Ferries worker accused of criminal negligence causing death began today…nearly seven years after the Queen of the North tragedy.
Karl Lilgert was the navigational officer when the ship veered off course, crashed and sank in March of 2006 near Hartley Bay.
The 14-member jury at his Vancouver trial has heard his lawyer claim Lilgert’s actions that night were not criminal, but prosecutors say he is responsible for the deaths of Gerald Foisy and Shirley Rosette because he wasn’t paying attention.
One of the witnesses slated to testify is Lilgert’s former co worker Karen Bricker.
She is expected to say she had an affair with Lilgert which ended a few weeks earlier and they spoke briefly on the bridge before the ship went off course.
The trial has now broken for the week.
It will resume Monday at 10am.
