Report cards should be essential: employer

VANCOUVER – The organization representing B.C. schools wants report cards to be declared an essential service and school districts to be reimbursed for services that striking teachers haven’t performed.

The B.C. Public School Employers Association will file an application with the Labour Relations Board today in an effort to put pressure on teachers who began job action last month on the first day of school.

Teachers have refused to prepare report cards, supervise students or do administrative duties as part of the first phase of their strike.

Susan Lambert, head of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, says she’s shocked the employer wants report cards to be declared an essential service after proposing teachers didn’t have to complete them if they went on strike.

Lambert says the teachers’ union accepted the employer’s proposal when both sides met in July.

She says teachers are continuing to communicate with parents about their children’s progress in person or by phone, email or through test results.
