Rio Theatre gets City backing

Vancouver’s Rio Theatre may soon be able to show movies again.

The owner of the theatre got a liquor license so she could hold live events and serve alcohol, but has found out the license prevents her from being able to show movies.

City Council has approved a motion for a request to be made of the Provincial Government to allow the Rio to hold alcohol-free screenings when there are no live events scheduled.

Councillor Heather Deal, “The type of enterprise that takes place in creative spaces is changing. A movie is not necessarily separate from a live performance, separate from a fundraiser, those things get all mixed up these days, and to potentially kill a very successful small business because you can’t modernize those rules would be a real shame.”

The motion also asks that Council push the Government to review liquor policy, with the goal of streamlining regulations.
