Ruling on doctor-assisted suicide expected tomorrow

A B.C. Supreme Court judge is expected to reveal a decision tomorrow over Canada’s law against doctor-assisted suicide.

The test case involves a 64-year-old woman from West Kelowna who is terminally ill.

Lawyers with the BC Civil Liberties Association say Gloria Taylor has the right end her life with dignity, before ALS kills her.

Current laws forbid doctor-assisted suicide based partly on claims it puts the elderly and disabled at risk.

Another constitutional challenge from Sue Rodriguez, a Victoria woman suffering from the same illness, failed in 1993.

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, slowly cripples you until you suffocate.

Taylor is already wheelchair-bound and uses a feeding tube.
