Safe boating week kicks off in Vancouver, days after Coast Guard cuts announced

It’s safe boating week here in B.C.

The campaign kicked off this morning – steps away from the soon to be shuttered Kitsilano Coast Guard station.

But there doesn’t appear to be much of an appetite to address the obvious irony.

Vancouver police Sgt. Norm Webster was asked if he expects the department to boost enforcement.

“I’m not prepared to comment on the situation there, but I’ll tell you this: We have an enforcement policy that is based on education.  We like to educate boaters first and make sure that they’re aware of the things that they require before they go out on the water.”

The Kits base will close this fall, and 12 workers will be cut.

The operations will move to Richmond’s Sea Island – 17 nautical miles away.
