School District’s fate still unknown

One day after CKNW reported the New Westminster School District has a deficit of more than 2-million dollars, the Ministry of Education isn’t yet indicating what consequences if any the Board may face.

Minister Don McRae was unavailable for comment, but in an e-mail, the Ministry says in these situations, it works with the District to develop a financial plan. It is working with the New West District on options.

It says the goal is to get rid of the deficit in a way that minimizes the impact on students and programs.

The e-mail finishes by saying the Ministry is confident the Board will develop a sound plan to address the situation.

A balanced budget was passed earlier this year. Only during the summer was it realized the District has the deficit; 2.2 million dollars from the 2011/2012 year. There is about 580-thousand dollars left over from a previous deficit.
