An independent B.C. MLA has refused to return to the BC Liberal party, despite a call from the premier herself.
John Slater, MLA for Boundary-Similkameen, says Christy Clark called him this week, asking if he would rejoin the caucus and support her government’s budget, to be tabled on Tuesday.
“I said, well, you know, I’m really reluctant because I think the leaders of the Liberal party betrayed me in the last four weeks, five weeks, whatever it is.”
Last month, the B.C. Liberals blocked Slater’s bid for re-election, citing his ‘personal issues.’
Slater promptly quit the party and now sits as an independent.
He says he refused Clark’s offer, as well as her request to help support other Liberal candidates, saying that would be a ‘flip-flop.’
“I don’t have enough faith in you guys, and frankly, I don’t believe you.”
Slater says he is also considering calling in the RCMP or a Special Prosecutor after some of his personal information leaked out.
He says within hours of his meeting with the Premier details known only to the two of them hit the internet.
“You know that the Liberals had recently ordered copies of government texts, and phone, and email records so that they would have something on me to, to kind of hold me to the fire.”
Slater is also concerned about personal content on his phone being leaked last month, he says he suspects it is someone inside the Liberal party.
He says IT guys in the BC Government have the capability but if it is happening it is “clearly wrong.”
Slater had initially said he would run as an independent in the Spring election but in late January he suddenly opted out, about an hour later the NDP candidate also in the Boundary Similkameen riding, Marji Basso, also resigned.
