Smoke alarm and alert grandmother save Abbotsford family

A family in Abbotsford is very lucky after a fire early this morning caused an estimated $ 100,000 of damage to their house, three vehicles and a neighbouring home.

The fire broke out shortly before 12:30 in the 31800 block of Mayne Avenue.

Deputy Fire Chief Mike Helmer says eight adults and two young children are all safe, thanks to a smoke alarm, and an alert grandmother who heard the alarm and smelled the smoke, and notified the rest of the family.

Helmer says without a working smoke alarm, the outcome could have been catastrophic.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
