Sporty students feel sting of teachers job action

A Chilliwack Grade 12 student says his rugby team could cancel the season because due to the teachers job action they can’t find another team to play against.

In an e-mail, Isaac Gauer says his team is coached by a Vice-Principal but other teams are being left high and dry because they need a teacher to coach.

Gauer asks if the dispute is about wages and class size then why is unpaid volunteer time affected.

Chilliwack Superintendent Michael Audet says the job action can create a problem, “We do depend upon the teacher to voluntarily coach. We do depend on outside of the classroom teachers voluntarily contribute and if they take away, if they don’t want to volunteer then some of our outside of the classroom programs could end up being shortchanged, students could end up being short changed.”

Teachers are voting on whether to escalate their job action.
