State of the Bridges Report, so far

Vancouver’s Director of Streets says political bickering aside, the city’s bridges are all in good shape.

Neil Carly says he doesn’t expect another chunk of concrete to fall of the Granville Street Bridge.

As for why it fell off, “It appears to be a factor of age, the bridge is aging and also weathering due to the elements and it looks like a bit of water damage. So we are also looking at where that water could have come from and how to address that.”

Carly says crews are examining the bridge and chipping off any bad concrete, It’s important to note it is surface deterioration and the bridges are structurally sound.”

He says on top of regular inspections all of the city’s bridges also get full inspections.
The concrete on the Granville Bridge was last fully inspected in 2008.
