Teachers are protesting Bill 22

While unon leaders have promised not to block access to schools, teachers in Vancouver are peacefully protesting government plans to end their job action.

“It is not a picket line. It is a demonstration line.”

Jack Macdermot is one of the teachers outside Strathcona Elementary, where job action involves handing out flyers protesting what they’re calling more than $ 3 billion dollars in cuts to edcuation over the last decade.

“We know for years and years, it’s been getting worse and worse as far as conditions in our classroom and the support.  It’s not a tenable situation and to fine us for doing that and to fine us for taking collective action to try to stop that, it shows that this government doesn’t really want to come to a negotiated agreement with us at all.”

He adds children with special needs are being neglected and at least 100,000 classes have too many students.
