Teachers to plot their next move

While kids are enjoying spring break, teachers will be plotting their next move in their ongoing labour dispute.

B.C. Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) president Susan Lambert said the union’s executive is currently drafting an action plan that will be presented to the membership at the BCTF’s annual general meeting in Vancouver March 17-20.

“We’ll present members with a whole range of options,” said Lambert. “I don’t know what will be in the action plan yet, we’re constantly making additions and subtractions to it.”

The BCTF has said it will not comply with Bill 22, which intends to legislate a six-month contract extension on teachers, appoint a mediator and — the union alleges — strip significant collective bargaining rights from the BCTF.

Bill 22 is expected to be passed next week.

The union still has permission to walk out and strike once next week under a Labour Relations Board meeting, but it must give two days’ notice.

Lambert said no decision has been made, but pointed out spring break starts next week in parts of the province, so a third of teachers won’t be in school anyway.
