The BC Civil Liberties Association turns 50

The BC Civil Liberties Association celebrates its 50th birthday this weekend.

From its humble beginnings in an organizer’s living room, to running with nine full-time staff and an array of lawyers, the association has championed the fight in BC for the respect of human rights.

Executive Director David Eby has been with the BCCLA for four years.

He says defining moments over the past five decades include standing up the War Measures Act in Quebec, defending a Vancouver gay and lesbian bookstore from censorship, and helping Gloria Taylor bring forward her case for her right to die.

“And one of my personal favourites is our campaign for the end of police self-investigation in relation to police(-involved) deaths, and the installation of the new independent investigation office.”

The association is marking the birthday with a set of speakers, a set of workshops, and a gala and awards night.
