New Westminster team heading to Eastern U-S for tips on disaster management

A committee from New Westminster will be heading to the coast of the Eastern United States to learn a few things about how to handle a disaster like Superstorm Sandy.

City Councilor Chuck Puchmayr says a third of New Westminster lives below the flood plain and there have been a couple of close calls over the last decade.

He says the team won’t go until things settle.

They will be “evaluat[ing] some of the different programs that New York City and New Jersey have put in place.”

The head of the city’s Emergency Management Team, and an expert from the Electrical Department will likely be part of the team.

Puchmayr says they’d like representatives from the School Board and the business community to go as well.

How it will all be paid for hasn’t been finalized, but Puchmayr says he thinks it can be covered within the current budget.
