The Province clears the way for a gondola up the Stawamus Chief

The provincial government is removing about two hectares of land from Stawamus Chief Provincial Park near Squamish.

Environment Minister Terry Lake says the land will instead be classified as a protected area and that will allow construction of a proposed gondola to the top of the landmark rock-face.

He says “One of the primary objectives of that park is recreation and this enjoys the support of the local government, first nations and many people in two public hearings that have been held by local government.”

Lake is already defending the decision, from its critics, to remove 2 hectares of land from the provincial park to allow the construction of a gondola to the top of the peak.

He said “this is a narrow corridor through the park which will still be protected, and it allows the ability for people to enjoy those views and those experiences in Stawamus Chief Park that don’t ordinarily get to do so.”

Lake says the proposal has lots of local support, but must still go through a provincial review.
