The province moves to force accident victims to submit to blood tests.

Emergency workers are applauding a new provincial bill that will give them the power to demand blood tests from accident victims.

Labour Minister Margaret MacDiarmid says first responders are sometimes exposed to bodily fluids from accident victims and while most are willing to go through a blood test, some are not.

She said “this would allow that emergency responder to actually go to court to get an order for that person to be tested.”

A welcome change for Ambulance Paramedics President Bronwyn Barter.

She said “we have lots of ghosts that we have already with the different things we see every day, and this is another thing that just can help us go home and sleep at night.”

Early identification of blood borne diseases like HIV and Hepatitis can lead to early treatment and prevent infection among first responders.
